The picture of Matt Donovan above appears to have been taken in the torture room where Stefan and Damon are torturing Elena to try and get her humanity back. Since Matt is still human, he remains part of the “dying breed” on the show.
However I've also read spoilers about Katherine coming in and being present while Stefan and Damon torture Elena. So who knows, we'll just have to wait until Thursday (Wed or Fri, it depends what time zone you're in)
